New Delhi, September 10, 2023 – In a remarkable display of sporting prowess, the Indian contingent has topped the medal table at the 2023 Asian Games, held in Hangzhou, China. This historic achievement marks the first time India has emerged as the overall champion at the prestigious multi-sport event, surpassing powerhouses like China and Japan.
The Indian team’s performance was nothing short of dominant, winning a total of 101 gold medals, 78 silver medals, and 69 bronze medals, amassing a grand total of 248 medals. This tally eclipsed the previous best performance by India at the Asian Games, which was in 2010 when the country won a total of 201 medals.
The success was widespread across various disciplines, with Indian athletes excelling in both traditional and emerging sports. Standout performances came from the country’s wrestlers, who claimed 12 gold medals, as well as the track and field team, which won 18 gold medals, including record-breaking displays in events like the 100m, 400m, and long jump.
India’s dominance was not limited to individual events, as the country also emerged victorious in several team sports, such as hockey, kabaddi, and basketball. The women’s hockey team’s triumph over reigning champions South Korea was particularly noteworthy, as the team continued its ascent to the top of the continent.
“This is a momentous occasion for Indian sports,” said Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. “Our athletes have displayed unparalleled determination, skill, and resilience to achieve this historic feat. This victory is a testament to the hard work and support provided by the government, coaches, and the entire sports ecosystem in the country.”
The Asian Games triumph comes on the heels of India’s strong performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where the country secured its best-ever medal haul. This latest success is expected to further boost the morale and confidence of Indian athletes, as they set their sights on the 2024 Paris Olympics and other major international competitions.
The government has announced a series of incentives and rewards for the victorious Indian contingent, including cash prizes and enhanced support for the country’s sports development programs. As India celebrates this historic achievement, the nation’s sports enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the country’s journey towards global sporting dominance.
